As standard, V-belt pulleys (also known as belt pulleys) are available in undrilled, pre-drilled or clamping bush variants. Undrilled and pre-drilled models must first be provided with a bore hole and possibly with a keyway and a threaded hole. In contrast, the clamping bush version (also known as the clamping sleeve version) does not require any additional machining in advance. This model is already equipped as standard with a conical bore and threaded bores for mounting the bush on the shaft and is always used in conjunction with the associated clamping bush.

The associated Taperlock bushes are available with bore holes in various sizes and with a keyway in both metric and imperial dimensions. They are supplied together with the appropriate socket head screws and can be found in this online shop under the clamping bushes product group. The major advantages with using a clamping bush lie in the fact that the pulley and shaft do not have to be modified beforehand and that mounting and removal are very simple.

The most common types of V-belt pulleys with taper clamping bush are SPZ, SPA, SPB and SPC. These are available from stock. In addition to these profiles, other types of V-belt pulleys with clamping bush are also available.

V-belt pulleys are usually made from cast iron (GG) and steel. If required for certain applications, it is also possible to manufacture these components from aluminium, stainless steel or plastic material. There is also the option of supplying V-belt pulleys with an additional surface treatment if this is required by the ambient conditions of the drive. Furthermore, V-belt pulleys can be manufactured to customer specifications. In our turning shop we can machine standard pulleys based on drawings or customer wishes.

A V-belt drive can have multiple belts running in parallel. Therefore, V-belt pulleys are not only available with different diameters, but also with multiple grooves. Pulleys with a diameter of more than 125 mm are statically balanced. On request, the pulleys can be supplied with quality class Q 6.3 dynamic balancing. Dynamic balancing is recommended where the rotational speed is over 30 m/s, or where the diameter/width ratio is below 4 in combination with a rotational speed of over 20 m/s.

Several factors determine which V-belt type is best suited to a particular drive. These include the application — i.e. what is being driven, the power to be transferred, the desired speed as well as the centre distance of the pulleys and any possible impact loads. It is also important to know what ambient conditions are present and whether there are any space limitations.

Common standards for V-belt drives include: DIN2211, DIN2217, DIN7867, ISO4183, ISO5290, ISO1940 and ISO9981.
