Traditional neoprene V-belts are available as a closed (infinite) version in specified lengths. However, belts are sometimes required in a length that is not available as standard. In these cases, a V-belt composed of single links can be used, for example. This type of belt is a finite belt, made from a special polyurethane elastomeric material and available on rolls. The ends of the belt can be easily connected to each other in any desired length, without the use of tools. Link belts are ready for use in standard V-belt pulleys. However, these belts can generally only transfer a lower level of power than the standard neoprene V-belts.

As with the regular V-belt, link belts also require re-tensioning after a specific run-in period. This is very easy to do with this belt; simply remove the belt from the drive, take out a link and then re-tension the belt on the pulley (like tensioning a bicycle chain on the sprocket).

Versions are available where the ends are connected by a steel connector. In other versions, the ends are simply hooked together.

Common standards for V-belt drives include DIN 2211, DIN 2217, DIN 7867, ISO 4183, ISO 5290 and ISO 9981. Finally, an important consideration is whether the V-belts need to be statically conductive in accordance with ISO 1813 (ATEX environments).
