A chain drive is used to transfer power between two parallel shafts and comprises two (or more) sprockets, which are connected to each other via a chain.
Different types of chain can be used, e.g. roller chains, flat-top chains and other transport chains. Accordingly, suitable chains are available for each market segment in simplex, duplex and triplex versions in each inside dimension as standard and in accordance with the BS, ANSI and ASA standards.
As chains can be shortened, they are available in any length. It is also possible to fit the chain with all kinds of cleats.
A roller chain is typically made from steel, but is also available in stainless steel, or in versions that are hardened, nickel-plated or with a different surface treatment. In addition, chains made of special plastic combinations are available for the foodstuffs industry and other humid environments.
A suitable chain drive can be found for each specific field of application. Variants include maintenance-free, self-lubricating chains, but also specially reinforced chains, if necessary.
To decide on the correct chain, it is important to know whether the purpose of the application is power transmission or transport movement. Once this issue is resolved, the required quality must be determined. This depends mainly on the use, the ambient conditions, the product to be transported and its weight.
A transport chain is generally custom-made, but a range of standard flat-top chains from System Plast is also available. These chains are available in metal and in thermoplastic versions.
A transport chain can basically be used in every industry, but can frequently be found in the production of foodstuff, beverages, tobacco and concrete/stone, as well as in the steel industry. They are also often found in more specialised industries such as in sluices, in airports or in canning plants.
When a high degree of accuracy is required in the case of two or more chains running in parallel, one available option is the "Match & Tagged" service: The difference in lengths in such chains is a maximum of 0.5 mm, depending on the total length.
