Wiper seals

Wiper seals, also known as scrapers, keep the rod in your hydraulic cylinder clean. This protects the underlying components, such as guides and rod seals, against wear and damage. Their use also significantly extends the life of your application.

When purchasing a wiper seal, you should consider the seal's shape and size, and the material used for the product.

Types of wiper seal

ERIKS offers various types of wiper seal. The exact type you need depends on the conditions in your application. For example, you should always consider how dirty the area around the system can get.

Some wipers in our range have a dual function. That means that they act as both a wiper and a rod seal. This avoids a situation where the wiper scrapes off the lubricating film and causes dry-running in the system.

Wiper seal dimensions

The size of a wiper seal depends on the dimensions of your application. Make sure you know the inside diameter of the cylinder, the outside diameter of the cylinder, and the groove length. In addition, you must consider the height that the wiper may potentially have. Armed with this information, you can quickly and easily select the right product.

Wiper seal materials

We use different materials for the production of wiper seals, such as NBR, FKM, polyurethane, PTFE, rubber fabric and brass. Each material is the basis for a unique compound; i.e. a recipe of different material components that result in specific properties when combined.

You should make sure that the material used for a wiper seal matches the conditions of your application. The summary below provides concise information about the most popular materials and their properties.

  • NBR wiper seals

Many wiper seals are made of NBR, also known as nitrile rubber. This rubber material may come into contact with oils. NBR on the other hand is not very resistant to UV radiation, ageing and high temperatures (above +120°C).

  • FKM wiper seals

FKM is the sealing material to use for applications involving strong chemicals and high temperatures. This rubber material is also known by its brand name, Viton, and is suitable for applications up to +200°C. Furthermore, the standard compounds are resistant to many strong acids, but not to hot water or steam. Only a few special FKM compounds are suitable for extremely low temperatures (down to -40°C or below).

  • Polyurethane wiper seals

Compared to other elastomers, polyurethane has good wear resistance, extensive elasticity and a high tear strength. The material's gas permeability is low, making this type of wiper seal particularly suitable for hydraulic cylinders. Furthermore, this material (PUR with a special ester polyol) is resistant to hydrolysis and water.

  • PTFE wiper seals

PTFE, also known by the brand name Teflon, is highly resistant to strong acids and bases. This plastic is not wear-resistant, and unlike the elastomers mentioned above, also not elastic.

  • MES wiper seals

MES wiper seals consist of combinations of different materials. Common combinations are brass with stainless steel or with carbon steel and a rubber material. Brass is durable and self-lubricating. So it is suitable for rods with where heavy soiling occurs or where ice can form. Stainless steel is highly resistant to acids and corrosion. Carbon steel is pliable, durable and has good thermal conductivity.
