Cylindrical clamping bushes or tensioners have a conical inner and outer ring with clamping bolts. They are designated as "cylindrical" because these clamping bushes are mounted in a cylindrical bore.

When the clamping bushes are tightened, the inner ring is forced on to the outer ring, creating an interlocking connection between the disc and the shaft, or between two shafts. With disc and shaft connections, a cylindrical clamping bush is used primarily if the transmission of force is required, where a key way is not used.

Cylindrical clamping bushes are available as both self-centring and non-self-centring models. The elements are usually made from steel, although they can also be supplied on request in a different material and/or with a surface treatment.

Current standards for shaft couplings are DIN 740, DIN 115 and DIN 116.
